Wood working is incredibly satisfying, especially when I can turn something that was once garbage into a useful item that can be useful and enjoyed for many years.
Those sound like great projects. I never thought of using skateboard decks…they use baltic birch for those, right? Thanks for sharing. Been working with hardwood for the past 3 years.
I have plans paying more visits to sawmills around for scrappy wood for my wood epoxy projects as well. Thanks once more for sharing. Nice score! I see free firewood listed all the time on Craigslist or other free groups. Especially after a storm. Trees come down, and people need the wood removed all the time. I never thought of checking Craigslist for free pallets.
That could save me a good amount of money… thanks!! I now have a picture in my head of a stealthy Mr. Tako, prowling the urban landscape, an apex predator pouncing on unwary wood. Thanks for the fun post! Not that I would have any idea what to do with it. You never know when the woodworking bug is going to bite — I have a couple female friends that enjoy building things too.
This reminds me of my youth when me and the neighborhood boys formed a club and needed a fort. Great post!
Just a thought! Once again — greatly enjoy your site. One of my goals for next year, to learn how to build furniture. Definitely have to build one myself. Will all the free firewood around here I wonder if it would make sense to get a high efficiency wood burning stove? I love that your hobby is woodwork. Just this weekend I went to the hardware store and simply asked: Hey, do you have free wood? Most hardware stores have some kind of discounted bin, but free is even better!
I used to have a pretty serious woodworking hobby. Over the years I built numerous pieces of furniture, mostly out of hardwoods maple, walnut, and cherry and some plywood. They had reasonable prices and a great selection of rough sawn lumber.
Although I spent a good amount of money on wood and tools, it was a very enjoyable experience that allowed me to explore my creative side. Not to mention the money I saved by building my own furniture!
I love that you are super resourceful not only for yourself but for the environment as well. If a planer is available, you might consider calling local Arborists. Some sell, but some give away. Thank you so much for the ideas to acquire wood! I especially enjoyed your tip of re purposing old furniture. Some of these comments reminded me of certain places in my state that have fallen trees that you can go collect with a inexpensive permit. Thanks for posting! Just waiting on a nearby glass shop to stock up again.

And they are still less expensive than select pine boards or hardwood boards. But plywood actually can work really well for all kinds of DIY projects. Some of the really nice, thick plywoods can seem pretty pricey. You can cut a large sheet of plywood into smaller pieces for smaller projects or even cut it into strips to make inexpensive wood planks.
These thin plywood sheets are usually used as underlayment when laying floors, but they also have lots of other great uses.
I love to cut plywood into strips to make super cheap wood planks. And MDF is usually much cheaper than comparable plywood. But you can also buy precut MDF planks if you want to save some time. Most home improvement stores have a bin or shelf of cull lumber somewhere near the back of the store. Cull lumber is lumber that is too warped, split, or otherwise damaged to sell at full price. It can also include scrap wood that is left over after customers have wood cut in the store.
If you need smaller pieces of wood, cull lumber could be a good solution. You may be able to cut off the damaged parts of the board or find some smaller scraps. But there is a lot of luck involved — depending on the day, you may find a huge pile of wood to pick from or an empty bin. Yes, you really can buy secondhand wood. I got most of the wood for the projects in my book secondhand and some of it was even completely free! You may not realize this, but you can actually find wood for sale on Craigslist and Facebook.
When I let my friends and family know I was trying to build up a stash of wood to use for projects, it turns out several of them had scrap wood piles in their garages or basements that they were happy to clear out, usually for free. Just remember to wear gloves and watch for old nails when collecting it.
If you love the look of reclaimed wood, this can be an awesome way to find it for free.
