HI Thanks for the reply. If I understand correctly, the mft is a master record of all computer activity no matter what. The reason I asked, when I got my second computer just for my Microsoft FSX sim, I uninstalled the program and deleted what got left over.

Plus deleteing fsx files during normal use. I used my tuneup unitlities to do a undelete just to see what was there and was surprised to see a lot of fsx stuff come up, along with a few uninstalled games that my wife got via Big Fish Games. Needless to say, I did not allow the undelete to take place, was just curious. Is there any harm in letting that stuff stay?

Does it evently overwrite? Can that residue junk even be deleted at all? Thanks for taking the time to read this and replying. Regards Ernest. Rule 2; If it is not broken, do not fix it. All information about a file, including its size, time and date stamps, permissions, and data content, is stored either in MFT entries, or in space outside the MFT that is described by MFT entries. However, disk space that has been allocated for these entries is not reallocated, and the size of the MFT does not decrease.

Space for file and directories are also allocated from this space, but only after all of the volume space outside of the MFT zone has been allocated. Depending on the average file size and other variables, either the reserved MFT zone or the unreserved space on the disk may be allocated first as the disk fills to capacity. Volumes with a small number of relatively large files will allocate the unreserved space first, while volumes with a large number of relatively small files allocate the MFT zone first.

In either case, fragmentation of the MFT starts to take place when one region or the other becomes fully allocated. If the unreserved space is completely allocated, space for user files and directories will be allocated from the MFT zone. The MFT itself can be defragmented. They are hidden from the Windows API for very good reasons In fact the RKR webpage lists the inaccessible metadata filenames.

Simplest way to view master file table MFT size in Windows 7? Is there a built-in command line or other tool that reports the MFT size in Windows 7? Asked By: user Answered By: DavidPostill.

What could 'Roaming not allowed by server' of ssh client mean? How to get a linux directory listing for files beginning with a certain letter that doesn't descend into subdirectories?
