Robert Ellert, the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum offers Flagler College students and the Northeast Florida community a venue for fostering knowledge and a deep appreciation of contemporary art. As an educational resource for the College, the Museum exhibits regional, national and international artists, and provides opportunities for critical engagement and exposure to a variety of exhibitions and personal interactions with visiting artists.
The Museum challenges students, the Flagler community and the public to cultivate individual creativity, critical reflection, historical consciousness and respect for the free exchange of ideas.
In this spirit, the Museum also hosts public programs, including artist talks, readings, panel discussions and film series that provide a platform for vital interdisciplinary dialogue. Augustine Beach St. Augustine Shores Switzerland Vilano Beach. One of the few Flagler hotels to survive the Great Depression, the property was commandeered by the U.
Coast Guard during the Second World War for use as a training center. The hotel and city are considered the birthplace of the Coast Guard Reserve. Several thousand recruits received their training here, including the celebrated African-American artist Jacob Lawrence. The twin towers were originally storage tanks designed to supply the hotel with running water.
One of the towers was converted and used as a brig by the Coast Guard. During the early Civil Rights Movement, the hotel dining room was the scene for a sit-in, the first major demonstration in St.
Four years later, the hotel would become the showpiece of the newly established Flagler College. The school would spend millions of dollars restoring the building to its original glory. The historic hotel, now a dormitory for female students, is open for public tours.
A tour of the college enables you to journey back to the Gilded Age and experience an opulent turn-of-the-century hotel. Reservations are not required, but you should arrive at least 20 minutes before one of the scheduled twice-daily tours, which are led by student guides. These tours highlight the architectural heritage of this designated national landmark. The Rotunda features an intricate mosaic floor and walls adorned with elaborate paintings and murals by George Maynard.
Guests will move on to the dining room where the stained glass windows stream light onto the beautifully hand painted murals on the walls and ceilings. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the fourth-floor parlor over the Rotunda offer magnificent panoramic views of St. George Street or in the lobby gift shop. The college offers discounts for children, senior citizens and military personnel.
Boasting a history stretching back almost years and warm, sunny weather, St. Internships are a critical part of most curricula and contribute greatly to student success upon graduation. Every college department promotes these goals and is dedicated to working together to ensure that during their first year Flagler students become active, vital members of the college community. A relatively young institution founded in , Flagler College is also noted for its historic beauty.
