The good news is that you still have oil in your engine. As is convenient you should add about 1-quart of oil. There are many reasons for this. Regardless, you should tend to this immediately as you do not want to run any car with low oil pressure. The BMW E46 has been a great car for us over the years.
With continued maintenance and care, we have had great luck and about 60, miles of use. If you are considering a BMW E46 whether it be a Sedan, Coupe, Convertible, or even Wagon we suggest buying one with long service history and neurotic prior owner.

Will i notice anything or am I waisting my time? Also looking at getting an exhaust, don't know anything about exhaust systems, i'm after more of a 'rasping sound', my friend has a full Miltek system on his Mk1 R32 which is the sound i'm after, but i don't believe they do them for E46 ci's only M3's, correct me if i'm wrong.

Car has k miles. Up until now I'm changing my mind. I've changed the oil every 15k. I'm gonna change the oil tomorrow and had my mechanic check the oil and he noticed that my engine looked dirty and was starting to show signs of oil not being changed frequently enough.
My questions are: Should I change my oil? If I do change to regular castrol non synthetic and change the oil every 3k instead of 15k will the engine clean up at all? Should I just stick to BMW synthetic and change it every 7. Recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Facts would be even better.
Thanks everyone. Well if your engine looked dirty due to not frequent oil changes you should probably change your oil now and more frequently don't you think. The only other alternative to that would be to change your oil less frequently but I don't think that's a step in the right direction. Fact: The longer you wait between oil changes the more broken down oil gets.
Fact: The more broken down oil gets the worse job it does at protecting your engine from wear. Fact: The older your car gets the more frequent you should change your oil especially if it's been neglected as far as going so long without an oil change the engine internals look dirty and sludgy.
Fact: The older oil gets means that the dirtier the oil filter gets which means the filter isn't doing the best job it can do at filtering out oil, which keep in mind now has many many miles of sediment in it which is continually getting passed through the engine.
Fact: The longer you drive your car with old deteriorated broken down oil the less likely it is that your car will go the distance without the motor wearing out. So change your oil more frequently with the oil that's recommended in your service manual or an equivalent to that oil.
Or in other words change your oil more frequently with the same oil you have been using. I'm just quoting the Bentley service manual so that I don't sound crazy. I average 20k miles a year. So it's never gone over a year without an oil change. The 7. I was afraid of changing from Synthetic. In my is I put Mobil 1 synthetic.
